Movingpictures9: collaboration and cooperation

There seem to be a run of events about collaboration, working together, or other ways of putting this. I'm talking at one tomorrow at Northern Stage which you can also see at various places and, I think, on-line. (Certainly there'll be a twitter stream to follow.) You can read about it here . I don't have time right now to explore the theme in detail, I'll maybe do a wrap up of thoughts from this and last week's LARC event at the RSA. But there is a strand that says collaboration is not always the right thing, and that some things described as collaboration are more like cooperation. The above video may shed some light. For those whose minds work differently, the video below may also help.

Eclecticism and the creative case for diversity

Recently I chaired three ‘creative conversations’ about the ‘creative case for diversity’, organised under the banner of ‘Eclectic’ by BALTIC , Gem Arts and Zendeh and supported by the promulgators of the creative case , Arts Council England . These brought people together to hear some thoughtful and provoking speakers, and then to have open space style conversations around topics of their own choosing. The idea was that these events were very much ‘sector-led’, rather than being driven by Arts Council, and were about creativity and the creative case rather than nuts and bolts equality plan issues. It felt as if this idea was welcomed by the people who attended – although I guess you have to wonder whether it is by the people who didn’t attend. Maybe there are some NPOs and others who think the creative case doesn’t apply to them, and they are fine ‘doing what they do’ with who they do it. Do you feel lucky?

One hopeful thing for artists looking for funding is that - so far - recessionary times have been good for lottery funding, as people are buying more lottery tickets, and we know the Coalition of the Independently Wealthy want to increase the share of lottery funds going to the arts. Unfortunately, that requires legislation so is not going to kick in for a year or so. So the search for alternative sources of income picks up pace. (Everyday I look for philanthropists on Stockton High Street, whilst out for a sandwich, but have yet to locate one.) One group of artists, led by Ellie Harrison, have decided to take an alternative approach to lottery funding, with the Artists Lottery Syndicate . Movingpictures7: world summits and Andy Palacio

Just as in October my mind always wanders back to the years I used to run a literature festival, June now always makes me remember the World Summit on Arts & Culture which Arts Council England co-hosted with IFACCA in 2006. In fact today it's five years ago exactly since the opening day - one of the most stressful but enjoyable days work I've ever done. (I was officially leading and 'carrying the can' for the whole thing, in my role at ACE.) You can see the conference report here to find out what we did. Sarah Gardner and the team at IFACCA are currently preparing for the 5th World Summit, which takes place in Melbourne in October - read all about it here . I can heartily recommend attending a World Summit for funders and policy makers and those interested in that field with the time and budget to do so.
